The bible says it is better to give than to receive . . . and this, I believe, includes your thoughts. If you wish to be miserable, spend more time thinking about yourself. If you wish to be happier, just think about bettering someone else.
Sounds simple but it is hard to implement.

Concerning Freud, I normally don't put much credence in anything he posited, (he was afraid of ferns - go figure) however his insights into the subconscious effects in early childhood seem to be accurate. 

Perhaps the subconscious is the real reason we find ourselves making the same mistakes over and over again.
